Position Title:    Library Technician I – Circulation Assistant – Youth Services

 

Accountability:   Shall operate under the supervision of the Director.

 

Overview of the Position:   Part Time Position – 16-20 hours per week.

 

This position is focused on Youth Services, encompassing Children and Teen services and participates in all operations associated with circulation desk services related to the operation of the library. It requires knowledge of library services, principles, practices, and procedures, including copyright and confidentiality laws. This position requires accuracy, self-direction, and the ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally. Strong customer service skills are essential.

 

Essential Functions of the Position:

 

  • Assist the Children’s Librarian to supervise and help young patrons and their caregivers; assist with planning and supervision of programs for preschool children and the Birth to grade 5 summer reading program, including summer performers for children. Conducting book talks and outreach activities.

  • Staffs the circulation desk, registers borrowers, checks out material to users, returns material from users, and processes holds as requested.

  • Assist Teen Librarian with teen programs and coverage in the teen room.

  • Assists in selection of materials for juvenile patrons (Birth to grade 5), identifying material, print and eResources, and responding to specialized patron needs.

  • Provides various clerical support services.

  • Participates in collection management responsibilities including shelf maintenance, and book displays.

  • Assists Children’s Librarian in collection development process by reading reviews, recommending materials based on knowledge of collection, and promoting the collection.

  • Carries out policies established by the Board of Trustees, always dealing with the public in a professional manner.

  • Effectively communicates the library’s activities and services to the public in the library.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to learning new skills and ideas that support the library’s mission and goals.

  • Participates in all staff meetings and trainings.

  • Performs other duties as required by the Director.

 

Required Knowledge:

 

  • Knowledge of library policies, services, practices, and procedures, including copyright and confidentiality laws.

  • Knowledge of customer service principles.

  • Knowledge of computer technology (hardware/software) including automated library systems and the Internet.

 

Required Skills:

 

  • Skills in communication sufficient to ensure quality services to diverse public library users.

  • Skills in use of a computer.

  • Ability to work on a multi-task-oriented basis as needed.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes days, evenings, weekends, and emergencies.

  • Ability to use a computer system to obtain information from a variety of software applications.

  • Ability to use the Internet to obtain credible research information.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in elementary education preferred. A combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skill and ability, may be considered.

 

Starting salary: $17.00/hour
